10, I believe therefore 2 to go.
Unusually, where it's obviously lined itself up for another season (or 10, as fecking usual with every sodding TV series now), I'm really hoping there is one, and soon. https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2024/04/25/...
I also finished this on the weekend. I rarely hold my attention long enough on TV/ films these days, especially when I have to concentrate on reading subtitles.
BUT, this was brilliant. I actually thought the Blackthorne actor and subsequently the character was by far the weakest in the show, all the others were excellent.
Mariko, Yahbushige and Toranaga were the standouts, the acting was so good. Japanese society was brutal, but also very honourable at the same time.
I think it'll probably a series that I'll return to in the future.

It looks they're going to try for 2 more series.

I saw this, so I assume they'll be deviating from the book now? My understanding was the fist series the entire book bit I've not read the book so not sure. https://screenrant.com/shogun-seasons-2-3-developm...
On the one hand, I'm glad we're getting more as it was awesome but I just hope it's as good as the original.
As the book doesn’t deviate that much from history, presume they will tell the story of Toranaga becoming Shogun and then killing the heir. Or they could have a prequel, Akeshi’s betrayal of Nobunaga, Toranaga sitting out the war in Korea.
(One reason why the real life Toranaga was in such a strong position. As he had been an early and key supporter of the Taiko rather than trying for power himself, he had been granted one refusal of an order to serve. He used this to nope out of the Japanese invasion of Korea, which was a bit of an all round disaster, so still had a strong army and economy)
Saying about the three unifiers of Japan in the period. How would you make a bird sing?
Nobunaga - if the bird doesn’t sing, kill it
Hideyoshi (Taiko in the book) - If the bird doesn’t sing, make it
Tokugawa (Toranaga) - If the bird doesn’t sing, wait for it to sing.

James Clavell had, once the success of the original book became evident, intended to write a sequel but sadly never got to do it. Despite the death of Mariko there is still plenty of story easily available with Toronaga installed as Shogun and the Anjin still bound to him and prevented from leaving the Japans. As long as they stay true to the original style of writing, character and storyline there is huge chance of two great series.
Keep the characters complex, maintain the backstory of Portuguese Catholicism vs British Protestantism, instill the gradual integration of the Anjin to Japanese lifestyle and include the successors coming of age and you have sufficient elements to make one and two great series.
