Apologies, but this is a long one.

Time for a new mattress so we head to Dreams. We were very pleased with the old one so order the exact same again, just a newer version. An all singing, all dancing, built in topper, million spring (maybe not quite, but you get the point) expensive bit of kit. We went for the same firmness both sides, despite Mrs E preferring things a little harder sometimes, and decided on super king as we like a bit of space to thrash about, especially when Mrs E builds up a head of steam.

“What about a frame?” asks the salesman.
“That’s less important but we’ll get that from Ikea” says Mrs E “it’ll then match the bedroom furniture.”
‘Be careful about that ‘cos Ikea use continental bed measurements and it’s likely the mattress won’t fit the frame” said the salesman, without any trace of irony whatsoever.
I’m not convinced but don’t say anything (I will truly learn a lesson from this) and we get sucked in to looking at wooden bed frames in the shop. We can’t find anything suitable so tell the salesman, who opens the Dreams web-site and shows us something only offered on-line that, to be honest, does tick all the boxes. He double checks all will fit (I don't recheck - schoolboy error!) and gears up to close the sale. Mrs E then goes into full bazaar mode and haggles 4 nice pillows and a couple of mattress covers to be thrown in for free, so we pay a deposit, sign up for interest free credit, and agree the delivery date.

Fast forward 1 week and its all delivered, on time, no damage, and taken upstairs by the delivery chaps. Perfect. The bed frame was self-build. We knew that and I’m pretty good at that sort of thing, so no problem. I unpack it, check all is there, look at instructions (I did, honestly!) and get stuck in. It takes no time and the frame is assembled - dead easy. I’m looking at it thinking, mmm its bigger than the old base. Anyway, after a bit of a struggle manage to get the mattress (which weighs about as much as the moon) onto the frame single-handedly. Mrs E’s nowhere to be seen…she seems to strangely disappear whenever anything like this happens, and then I notice the problem. Either the mattress is too small or the frame is too big.

There’s a gap of a good 4cm each side and about 8cm at the foot. It might not sound much but in real life it looks ridiculous, so I check the paperwork. The order says both mattress and frame are super king. The delivery note and packing says both are super king too. I get the product spec from Dreams web-site, measure everything and find both the mattress and frame are correct. It’s just they don’t fit together. A super king mattress should be 180x200cm. The new one is exactly that. The frame however is 194x216, but thats external. No internal specs on the website, but this thing I’ve built is 189x209 internally.

So I call Mrs E and tell her the news.
“Have you built the frame properly?”
“Yes”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeeees”
“Have you put the mattress on right?”
“What?, yes of course”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course I’m fking sure!”
Actually, I didn’t say that. I’m not that brave!
“Yes, I’m sure”
“Well, I’ll be home soon, I’ll take a look then”
I leave the mattress on the frame, don’t put any bedding on it and head down stairs just as Mrs E parks up. In she comes, clearly excited to see the new bed and I’m sure she thinks I’m exaggerating or I’ve assembled it upside down or something. She heads upstairs and literally 5 seconds later makes very good use of her fishwife ancestry. I head upstairs and let her vent.
“That’ points Mrs E “is simply way too small!”
“That window’s not open is it? Christ knows what the neighbours are hearing.”
“Fire up the Quattro, we’re heading straight back to Dreams.”

If you’ve got this far…well done, and thanks for reading.

And so we get to Dreams. The same salesman is there, Mrs E takes no prisoners and launches into full irate shopper mode. He says there’s nothing he can do, and instantly regrets it because saying no to Mrs E simply isn’t done. Once he’s had a serious verbal kicking we get customer services on the phone to see what can be done. Unsurprisingly, the customer services rep wants to speak with me, and I give him the basic story.
“Have you built the frame properly?”
Here we go again…”Yes”
“Are you sure, as some folk do find the instructions a bit complex?”
“Yeeees”
“Have you put the mattress on right?”
Oh, for fks sake - seriously “Yes”
“Are you sure, because if its properly centred the gaps should be fine?”
“Yes its on right, yes it’s centred properly and no, the gaps are not fine”
“You need to sleep on it for a few nights, the mattress will ‘relax’ a bit and fill the gaps”
I’m losing the will to live at this stage “Listen, there’s no way a hand made mattress will ‘relax’ that much and if it does, remember 8cm in width and length, you can take it back because the quality must be st.”
“Tell you what, Sir. We’ll get a bed inspector round, he will do a report and if the goods are out of spec or faulty we’ll refund the money”
“But they’re not out of spec or faulty, its just the internal spec of the frame is way too big for the mattress.”
“Whatever, the next stage in this is a bed inspector.”
So, it was agreed a bed inspector (is this even a job?) would call ‘round.

Fast forward another week. In comes the bed inspector, heads upstairs, into the main bedroom and straight away says,
“That looks ridiculous”
I spend a few minutes explaining things. He measures everything, takes loads of photo’s and confirms that, whilst everything seems to be within tolerance, he will mention in the report that the frame is too big for the mattress. That, seemingly, is that.

And, here we are today. Mrs E has been on to the bed inspection company (yes, it is indeed a job…and even an industry which, in itself, says something) who confirm the report has been sent to Dreams. Excellent. She then calls customer services, and here’s where is really goes downhill. They deny receiving the report, then somehow find it, then confirm as both mattress & frame are within tolerance that’s end to matters. Deny there’s any mention in the report that the frame is too big for mattress. Sorry, there’s nothing more we can do. Reluctantly agree we can exchange the frame but only if we chose something from their sister brand, Feathers & Black, whose prices for a similar frame are at least double. Jesus, what a fking shower these lot are. Mrs E then goes into full grind you down with female logic mode and, 30 minutes later, comes up trumps. The chap is a gibbering wreck and simply caves. Hats off to Mrs E!! Full refund of frame agreed, will be collected next Tuesday AND they’re waiving the collection fee.

So, lets see what happens - fingers crossed and watch this space. We then went online and ordered a frame from Ikea (which, handily, does state external AND internal specs) for delivery, next Tuesday. And…it was cheaper.

Sorry I’ve gone on a bit but do beware, if you go to Dreams (more appropriately, Nightmares), don’t trust the sales folk and know full well it’ll be a massive and time consuming ball ache if you need to resolve any problems. Unless, or course, you’re married to Mrs E. What a woman!!

As for Dreams’ Customer Service…it just, isn’t.

I did read that far, and thank you for the warning!

I'd say you'll be getting the right combination, because we bought both frame and mattress from Ikea and the mattress is like rock. I haven't had a good night's sleep since. I added 3 toppers, which help a bit.
Was going to Dreams soon to look for a mattress, but maybe not!

That is crap!

Looks like a UK mattress on an IKEA frame.

I know as I tried it with my Autistic son's bed, who is OCD too and he just wouldn't accept it biggrin

Not sure where you go from here OP and I suspect you've paid a fortune frown

I think IKEA used to be European sizes many years back but switched to UK sizes (in the UK) quite some time ago.

I enjoyed the witty tale - it's too small and missus likes it hard etc.... but how does this become the mattress sellers problem? It's the correct dimension and the salesman warned you Ikea beds are different sizes.

Surely you should set the guard dog onto Ikea, no?

I believe he ended up being persuaded to buy the frame from the Nightmares® web site, having ordered the mattress in-store, and they didn’t match despite the salesman apparently checking that they would (and having told them an IKEA one wouldn’t).

He has now ordered one from IKEA, and the whole of PH is on tenterhooks waiting to see if his missus will be content with the extra couple of inches.

Ah, that'll teach me to scan read. I saw self build and assumed chavary aka Ikea! Now he has actually gone full chav I look forward to the tale of the bed collapsing mid antics to shouts of "f**k me" in the middle of the night. I'm sure the neighbours will love it.

The mattress is a Flaxby (as was our old one and it was lovely), supplied by Dreams. There was no problem with the mattress at all. I suspect loads of retail outlets sell Flaxby.

She's not really an attack dog smile, it's just that she's very good at knowing just how far to push, without going too far. She's been PA to a couple of really senior directors and just gets things done.
